Hi, I’m Robert Scheer, and welcome to my PilgrimagesPlaces.com website.
Although I’ve been fascinated by sacred sites and places of power for longer than I can remember, I started working on it seriously in 1996 when I became the editor and publisher of the magazine Power Trips, which focused on spiritual travel to sacred places.
Since then, my travel writing career spread out, and now my articles have been published in dozens of magazines and newspapers across the USA and Canada. I’m a past president and lifetime member of the British Columbia Association of Travel Writers (BCATW) and a former president of the B.C. chapter of the Travel Media Association of Canada. (TMAC).
I’ve interviewed a real witch doctor in Africa, been treated by a Mayan medicine woman in Belize, shared San Pedro with a shaman by starlight on top of Machu Picchu, and touched the holy rock in Jerusalem upon which God commanded Abraham to slay Isaac.
I’ve also hunted tigers (with a camera) in India, made fire with a hand drill in a Maori village in Kenya, gone swimming with dolphins in Florida, and visited the mud volcano on Pulau Tiga island in Borneo where the first season of the Survivor TV series was produced. You can read more articles on my personal website, RobertScheer.net.
The purpose of my passion for spiritual travel and sacred sites is to help publicize the fact that Mother Earth is a living being who should be at least respected, if not worshiped, rather than being exploited and ruined to the point where, in another few decades, she may no longer be able to support human life as we know it. She also has much to teach us, if we can only learn how to listen.
Since ancient times, people have been making pilgrimages to special sacred stones, springs, rivers, forests, meadows, mountains, volcanoes, caves, wells, etc. We go their to gain the benefits of working with the spiritual forces of Nature. We go there to reduce stress, heal our body and spirit, and gain enlightenment.
My hope is that my “boomer” generation, who have worked all their lives for material gain and still do not feel fulfilled will realize that the slogan “he who dies with the most toys wins” is a lie. The purpose of this website is to help not only seniors, but also anyone who feels the calling of pilgrimage places gain the most benefits from them.
If you are able to travel to these sacred sites and places of power in person, great! The information in these pages will, I hope, assist your journeys. But if you are only able to be an “armchair traveler” to spiritual destinations, then I feel honored to help you journey to them in your mind.
Finally, communication is a two-way process, and I treasure your participation. Please feel free to comment below our articles, and join the conversations there. You are also welcome to contact me via email with your input about spiritual travel, sacred sites, pilgrimage destinations, places of power, and your experiences with them.
